Michał Malec

Composer

Michał Malec was born in Lublin, Poland in 1995. In 2014 he graduated from Tadeusz Szeligowski School of Music in Lublin, where he studied vocal. In 2019 he graduated from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw where he studied composition under Paweł Łukaszewski. He has also studied at the University of Aberdeen under Paul Mealor. Since 2020 he has been as an Assistant Lecturer in The Chair of Composition in Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw.

Despite his young age he is laureate of many prizes, including First Prize in the “Musica Sacra Nova” International Composers Competition in 2019, Third Prize in “Musica Sacra” International Composers Competition in 2021, First Prize in the International Composers Competition “In modo di Lutosławski” in Warsaw in 2013, Second Prize in the John Paul II Composition Competition in 2018, and Third Prize in 1 International Competition for Choral Composition ‘…a riveder le stelle’ in 2021.

He has composed extensively not only for voice and choir but also for chamber ensembles and orchestras. His works have been performed across Poland (Warsaw, Cracow, Wrocław, Białystok, Gdańsk, Bydgoszcz, Lublin) and internationally, in Vilnius (Lithuania), Berlin, Hamburg, Köln, Celle, Brauweiler (Germany), Tallinn (Estonia), Førde (Norway), Mertola (Portugal), Eilat (Israel) by performers such as the Polish-Norwegian Symphony Orchestra, the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music Symphony Orchestra, the National Forum of Music Choir, the Vilnius City Municipal Choir “Jauna Muzika”, The “Camerata Silesia” Ensemble of Singers of the City of Katowice, and Europäische Kammerchor Köln.

Michał’s music has been published by Schott Music as well as Polskie Wydawnictwo Muzyczne, Chopin University Press, and PH Publishers. His works have been recorded by i.a. National Forum of Music Choir, Polish National Youth Choir, Vocore, and Art’n’Voices. Four of these albums have received nominations for the Fryderyk Polish Music Award, the Polish equivalent of a Grammy Award. One recording - “Midnight stories” featuring his “Ballada”, recorded by Art’n’Voices, won the Fryderyk Award in 2021.
